Lophophora williamsii is soft, elastic, grey-green, broader than it is high, 5 to 8 cm across, branching in age. The underground extension of the body is a strong, turnip-like root, 10 to 15 cm long. The 5 to 15 ribs are shallow, divided in some forms into tubercles that bear tufts of matted hair forming a thick cover of yellow-white or grey-white wool on the crown. From this cover emerge large, pale violet or white flowers with a darker central stripe that arises throughout the whole growing period. The fruit is red, fleshy berry which is borne in the second year. The seed is small, black.

Lophophora williamsii ClusterLophophora williamsii Historical and Shamanic Use:

Lophophora williamsii is one of the strangest, most interesting of all cacti. Native Indians knew of its narcotic effects long before the arrival of the white man.

The use of peyote goes back through the empire of the Aztecs to an age of legend and myth. Certainly the cactus has always had strong religious associations. It was both a god and a route to heaven. When the Spaniards conquered Mexico, they were quite unable to suppress the religious rituals which surrounded the plant, the January celebrations which led to days of intoxication, or the pilgrimages of whole tribes to areas where the peyote grew abundantly. So the worship of the plant was merged with Christianity. Peyote is regarded as a gift from God. It counters the craving for alcohol and is not eaten to induce visions. It heals and teaches righteousness. It is eaten, or consumed as a tea, according to a formal ritual.
