Datura Stramonium is a robust annual of up to 1,5 metres in height. It has thick stems, large irregularly lobed, hairless leaves and large, attractive white or pale purple tubular flowers, followed by a characteristic four-locular fruit capsule. The distinctive fruits are thorny, and split open to release numerous small, kidney-shaped black seeds of about 3 mm long. It is widely distributed in the warmer parts of both hemispheres. It is employed especially in parts of Africa

Datura stramonium Historical and Shamanic Use:

Datura stramonium Botanical PlateDatura stramonium and related species have long been employed as sacred hallucinogens, and have played major roles in native medicine and magico-religious sites. The origin of this powerful hallucinogenic species of Thorn Apple is uncertain and its botanical history ardently argued over.

Infusions and decoctions of the fresh and dried leaves are used in carefully determined doses to sedate hysterical and psychotic patients and dried and powdered roots and leaves are used as a consciousness-altering snuff by diviners. Adequate doses of any part of the plant can cause mental confusion accompanied by vivid visual hallucinations. Weak infusions of the leaves are used for insomnia by the elderly and as aphrodisiacs by lovers. Datura seeds are well known to induce intoxication and hallucinations. Dried leaves can be smoked to induce euphoria.

In excessive doses, death or permanent insanity may occur. So potent is the psychoactivity of all species of Datura that it’s patently clear why people in indigenous cultures around the world have classed them as plants of the gods.
